Today and tomorrow are the last days when it is still possible to participate in the Estonian e-census. All Estonian residents are invited to complete the survey. By today, January 21, more than 530,000 persons, i.e. 40% of the population, have been enumerated on the basis of the census e-questionnaire.

During the whole e-census period, the most active respondents have been from Tartu city and Harju county, where approximately 45% of the population aged 15 and older had completed the e-questionnaire by yesterday (January 20). The response rate has been lowest in Ida-Viru county, at around 19%. The response rate is highest among women aged 40–65 and lowest among older age groups as well as among 20–35-year-old men.

According to Liina Osila, Population and Housing Census project manager, Statistics Estonia is hoping for active participation also among the Russian-speaking community. “The questionnaire is also available in Russian, and it is an easy and quick task to fill it in. There is definitely no reason to be concerned about the safety of your data. The data trusted with us are carefully protected, used only for statistical and scientific purposes, published as an aggregate and never shared with third parties,” added Osila.

Osila said that everyone’s contribution is important, because the Population and Housing Census provides a detailed and valuable dataset, which is used to make decisions that have an impact on the whole society. “For example, the data collected during the census allow making decisions about where to build roads or schools or in which area there is a need to increase welfare services. The data are used as a basis of various strategies and development plans. So, I invite everyone who has not yet filled in the e-census to do it, as now is the last chance,” said Osila.

We are especially hoping for e-questionnaires submitted by people who live at the mandatory sample addresses, where paper invitations were also sent. “We definitely need answers from all these residents. If they haven’t answered to the e-questionnaire by the end of tomorrow, they will be contacted in February by census takers, who will then collect the data either by phone or in rare cases, during a home interview,” added Osila.

The online questionnaire can be filled in at census.ee until the end of the day, Saturday 22. The questionnaire can be completed after authenticating oneself with an ID-card, Mobile-ID or Smart-ID. It takes around five minutes per person to complete the questionnaire. The collected and analysed data will be published gradually starting from June until the end of 2022.
