The population register is a database that contains the basic personal data of Estonian citizens, citizens of the European Union who have registered their residence in Estonia, and foreign citizens who have been granted a residence permit or right of residence in Estonia.

In the Population and Housing Census 2021, the majority of the data will be obtained from state registers and databases. It means that great efforts have been made over the last decade to improve the databases and to increase data quality. This work will continue to ensure the availability of up-to-date and accurate data in registers.

From now on, each of us should check, at least once a year, whether the personal information in public databases is still accurate. This is important for several reasons. The availability of correct data in the population register means that the state has important input for the better performance of its duties. Based on the data in the register, the state can plan investments and developments. Also, accurate data will ensure a smoother process in any proceedings people have with government agencies.

The responsibility for the accuracy of the data in registers lies with the state, but also with every individual. The easiest way to check your data is through the e-population register at https://www.rahvastikuregister.ee/, where you can log in using a card reader and a valid ID-card, or Mobile-ID or Smart-ID. Next, go to the “My data” tab and review, update and confirm changes to the following details:

  • address of the place of residence;
  • e-mail;
  • telephone;
  • additional address, if you have several permanent places of residence;
  • nationality;
  • native language;
  • level of education.
